Experience vs Book Knowledge
I had 16 years previous experience before teaching and continue working in the field while teaching. On 70 % of final course evaluation students refer positively to how I relate course work to real life experiences.
I relate situations to what they experience on the jobs while in the class.
I agree and try to incorporate my own experiences into the subject matter. This makes it easier for students to understand. I discuss "transfer pricing" between divisions of the same firm and use the example of an electronics firm I work for that would sell it's product to another division of the same firm, thus not allowing the selling division to maximize profit...
Hi Rebecca,
With your great attitude you are going to be an excellent teacher. Keep your eyes open to observe other instructors, read all you can about how to develop your instructional skills, and continue with your professional development by taking courses like this and you are going to be successful. Welcome to the profession.

I am new to teaching but have 8 years of real-life experience in my field. I truly hope that my experiences and perspectives can help my students visualize where they want to be in the future, despite my lack of formal teaching experience. I am excited to share my knowledge with others!
Hi Courtney,
Students look for applications of their newly acquired knowledge. By showing them how to apply their new knowledge they start to see the transference of this knowledge to their lives. This makes what they are learning "real".

I have to agree. After spending several years in college and graduate school I have found professors who have related the subject matter to life experiences great. I think this provides students with tangible examples for, at times, intangible concepts.
This is great to read! I was a middle school teacher the year after I graduated college and then entered the business world. Since then I have worked in my field of experience and now am returning to Education. I am re-learning the skills of an effective instructor but I do take comfort in my professional experience. I hope that my students’ evaluations will note my experience as a positive attribute.
