Pre testing
I like to do pre testing. Some of the questions I ask help me to get to know the students better and it gives me an opportunity to see where I might help them grow.
I always ask if they work, what type of skill level they have now and what areas they feel they want to learn more.
I believe it gives students piece of mind, knowing what to expect in format that I test.
I like the idea of pretesting. I can get to know something about my students and also give them an idea about content and format of tests to come. I think I will try to incorporate this into my next 'first class'.
I like the idea of doing a pre-test on the first day. I am teaching an intro class for the first time and it will be good to see where the students knowledge is in the sections before we discuss the material.
Hi Sara,
You will really be helped in your instructional planning by having a baseline from which to operate after you have done a pretest. As you say it also helps the students to understand what is to come.

I love the idea of pretest to determine the baseline knowledge for each student. It also gives them a great idea of what to expect to learn in the course.
Hi Lev,
I do because I need to know their math functioning level so I can then develop the math component for the course around their ability level. It helps us to get off to a good start with early success then we ramp it up as we move along.
Gary
do you pretest them in math classes as well?
Hi David,
Good approach. Base line data about student knowledge is as you know very helpful in planning the course content. You know where to start from and where you need to go with the current set of students.
