Meeting the class for the first time

When meeting the class for the first time it is important to set the tone and this brings the foundation for a positive and very meaningful learning experience. This has worked well for me in the past.

The first day's success largely depends on the dynamics that you can bring to some pretty dry stuff, like going over classroom policies, grades structures, etc...
To bring a few jokes or business related anecdotes are always useful. To move around the classroom helps to.
I always try to explain to the students how this class relates to the industry in concrete examples and terms. I try to show passion about the different components of the class .
Give them a short break so they can stretch. My students' attention span is fairly short....

I completely agree, they seem to feel like you care and that your actually interested in their education and learning ability. You make it personal and a more realy experience...of course, it's easier to do depending on class size.

Hi Neil,
Well said. This is really true for individuals that have lost their job and are retaining for a new career. They are in need of a mental boost and some self confidence. Anything we can do along this line will be appreciated by such students.

Everyone likes to feel important. When students know that you are taking the time and making the effort to get to know them better they always respond well. It helps them to realize their significance in the classroom.

Hi Aidan,
An instructor does not have to learn the names of students in order to teach but research has shown that there is an increased "buy in" by students when instructors learn their names and provide instructional support.

I remember a particular college course with probably 45+ students where the professors made no attempt to learn names. It seemed to be just a part of the classroom tone he set on day one. Funny that I don’t remember having a problem with it? To each his own I guess.
