After handing out all suggested material such as the syllabus, required texts, goals, objectives, course overview, student participation requirements, and evaluation procedures I think it is a good idea to provide the class with a pop quiz containing questions about key expectations covered in the aforementioned material. The quiz should be graded aloud in class. Also, I would provide question and answer time concerning expectations. Use clear, precise language and a direct, assertive tone when describing expectations so there is no doubt or uncertainty left in the minds of the students.

I think the important part about going over the syllabus is students get an idea of what they will be learn so they begin to get happy about the class!

It is important that students know what is expected (in writing) so that the particulars of the essay are clear, concise, and spell out exactly what is expected of the student.

Due dates, length, and number of references expected is also very important. If it is written ahead of time, students cannot argue when the requirements are not met--it was spelled out prior to the assignment.

Kodee,
It is so important for the students to have a clear understanding of the course expectations, rules and policies. This way everyone starts off knowing what is required for course success and they know the requirements are based upon what it takes for career success.

I think going over the syllabus during the first class lets them know my expectations. They see the assignments that will be due, they see the policy for late assignments, and they learn about my expectations regarding their participation in class.

when discussing what is expected of students at the beginning of class I address academic goals. I really emphasize attendance and behavior expectations as well.

Reiterate the the key components and allow time for questions and answers/comments.
