FIRST IMPRESSION

FIRST IMPRESSIONS FROM INSTRUCTOR TO STUDENT OR STUDENT TO INSTRUCTOR IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. A SENSE OF BECOMING COMFORTABLE IN THE CLASS.

To get them enthusiastic about the course by showing the relevance of the course to their focus field of study.

Hi Kristen,
Good balance in your offering the students the freedom to be students but the structure of learning. I am sure your students enjoy having both being offered to them.
Gary

First impressions are essential. I find that my students respect the freedom that I give them and the structure that makes them feel secure.

Hi Hector,
Since I teach classes that start at 4:00 pm and end at 10:00 pm I understand where you are coming from. What I do is to have a lot of activities that require the students to move around a lot. I lecture for 15-20 minutes and then I have them work in groups or have handouts for them to complete. The key is to keep the focusing and then refocusing on the subject matter.
Gary

I strongly agree. This will make or break the start.

Some students come to my class after a hard day of work and they do not listen and/or do not have the energy to participate. What should I do?

Hi Cecilia,
What have you found to be the biggest source of first day impact for your students?
Gary
