Meeting class for the first time

I am always excited and nervous the first day. But so far I love my students, and they seem to relax me when we start talking about what they know and what I know.

Hi Mark,
Showing you are human and have made mistakes in your past that can be used as examples are all good ways to show students you were once where they are. This helps students to get settled into the class plus share a laugh with each other.
Gary

Utilizing a great sense of humor and can diffuse any tense situation. I have always been able to calm students anxiety by showing them I am human and sharing a humorous, but sometimes embarrassing moment, of my career.

David,

A sense of levity is always a good "ice breaker" for the class. I try to keep it light and provide the class with a chance "get settled in".

Tia,

I too am excited on the first day of class. I try to help ease tensions by doing an "Ice Breaker" to ease them into the class and get thema chance to know me and their classmates.

When it's appropriate I like to start of with a bit of humor as soon as all of the students are in their seats. It gets them relaxed and smiling before I introduce myself. During lectures and lab work I continue with some humor and related stories to relieve any stresses that may start to build within the students.

Hi Eileen,
I can only imagine the story as well as other stories you have to share with your students. This is a great way to start a class off and I know you have their attention from the first minute. Students love stories about the field.
Gary

I love the first day of class, first impressions do count. They are also anxious about the course. To help them relax I tell them a funny story about me and how I became an OB nurse.
