1st Day of Class

Wow, the first day of class can be extremely challenging in several respects. I believe that an instructor is best received in the long term if they set the tone of the environment immediately.

I agree that the key to campus level tone is consistency. I am fortunate that my fellow instructors all share the same belief that this consistency matters and we all work together to provide this. It also makes it easier because the students know what to expect.

Hi Scott,
Good point. I teach in a situation where several of our faculty aren't really into what we are doing. Their big reason for teaching is that they get money for doing it. Things like students, programs, quality aren't really factors. Frustrating to say the least. Those of us that work hard at being professionals have chosen to maintain our efforts, stay dedicated to quality instruction and support our students. We are not going to let those others pull us down to their level even though they have tried. Our students have been very supportive of our efforts and our programs are growing. For us this is what we are all about. We want to impact the next generation of students entering our field.

Setting the tone in every classroom from every instructor. Each of us are different in many ways. However, if a school is to maintain the "TONE" all the faculty and staff need to be on board. One instructor can make it diffacult for the rest of us if they are unwilling or can't set the tone.

Hi Therron,
You are right. Set the tone the first day and this is the standard from which the students will measure future class meetings. This will help with class management and student progress.
