Before the first class

I teach online. Before class begins, I think its important to post a welcome letter, a meet & greet discussion board, and a list of student expectations. I introduce myself in the meet & greet, including my professional background. For the most part, the students respond positively.

Hi Denise,
I like your idea of sending a "heads up" email to get the students thinking about something they can share with the class. Sometimes they have a hard time thinking up something to say right on the spot this way they can mull it over and feel ready to respond.
Gary

I teach "in person," but I follow your rationale. I send a welcome to the class email with my contact info. I also ask the students to think about an aspect of their unique individuality they can share with the class...an unusual pet, an unusual hobby, a unique vacation...My students say they like having a "heads up" about what to talk about during our ice breakers, and their stories are usually quite remarkable!
