First Impessions - Be Approachable
It is important when you meet your class to let them know right away that you are approachable and there to help and guide them through the class.
I agree with you Gary. It is important that your students know that you are human and not a machine. Let them know that you are there to help them to be successful and will be available.
Haveing graduated from the school is a solid way to make a connection with your students.
Hi Carolyn,
From the first day forward an instructor needs to be clear and concise in terms of course requirements, expectations and policies. This sets the tone for the course. Once they are clear about the course students need to know that they have an instructor that is there to support them and guide their learning for the course. They don't need to be afraid of the instructor but should have respect for him or her.

In methods class the teacher said that one should start like a sergeant and then let up a little. I have never found that works - students need to know that they can ask questions and feel relaxed enough to learn.
MaxKnowledge has taught me how beneficial this is for students. With a Military and Police background, I am used to portraying a strict and rigid image. I then tend to relax and show more personality as the class progresses. I think I will make sure to greet them and be more friendly from the outset from now on.
