Get Your Students Hired
My first day teaching was a nightmare. I was sick and didn't have much of a voice. My students show a lack of respect for me and the class and I'm not sure how to fix this.
Remind students of the policies that they MUST follow in the student handbook. Then ask any student who does not follow this to leave and warn them a second problem will be reported to the Dean. You can start the couse with a pop quiz to get their attention and show you mean business.

Once you get to feeling better and have a stronger voice you can set about establishing the format for the class. I would have a direct talk with the students and explain how the class is going to be operated. Tell them that you will be fair, consistent and supportive of them and work hard to earn their respect. Have a private conversation with any student that continue to show disrespect for you and try to establish a working relationship with them. This should result in a better learning environment for your students and yourself.
