First impression by the instructor can motivate students.
Knowning much about the instructor during the first class can help motivate students. I have come across students who by merely hearing about the instructor's educational background, clinical experiences and achievements, summoned up the courage that, they could succeed in their career goals if they work hard in both classroom and clinical areas. This is a positive impact on the morale of the students.
I agree. Students can relate creating an openness to learn.
By introducing myself and explaining my background makes the students more comfortable if they may have questions that I may be able to explain while I was in the field.
I believe the fist impression is by far the most important.
Hi Scott,
By sharing your professional experience with students you are helping to establish your credentials as well as creating a connection with them that will start the development of both rapport and respect.

I find that giving a brief but thorough overview of my career to this point in time motivates the students by giving them a good example of what could transpire in their own lives. I also make sure they know I am open to questions and disscussion about the expectations and reality of our field.
Hi Galen,
I am always amused when I talk with students and they "suddenly" realize that I was a former student myself as well as having a life. Sharing the struggles and experiences you have had to get to where you are helps to reinforce in their minds that you do understand where they are coming from and some of the circumstances that are influencing their lives. Helps create a connection for them.

One area the students always question is "Does the instructor understand my circunstances?" I have a family, work, go to school, on and on. Sometimes they don't see you as ever having gone through those life challenges. Telling something about your college life and what you had to do to accomplish your goals can gel a class quickly and give you respect and authority.
A person must be careful not to come across as bragining, looking for sympathy or competitive. But to let the students know you can relate to their situation.
Thanks
Galen
True. knowing more about instructors also encourages students to believe they can aspire for success.
Hi Lola,
You are right about letting the students know you have extensive experience in the field. Sometimes they forget that you got to where you are through experience working in the real world so what you are bringing to the classroom/lab is real world based. That is to me a very impressive fact.
