by showing your students the expectations needed in the course. It may also eliminate the students who are not serious about taking the course to change their minds and widthdraw from the class. Because those are the ones who are not responsible and want you to baby them.
i think this is a very important concept with today's students. there seems to be a trend toward students who need everything handed to them. by being clear about your expectations it lets them know they will need to think, not just regurgitate content.

Good point about the need for students to step up and assume responsibility for their career training. We instructors need to help and support them but they are in the end the ones that have to step up and put forth the effort needed to be successful.
