incorporating real life
In teaching a composition course I have stressed how writing skills will be needed throughout the students' life experience, i.e., resumes, proposals, etc.
Real life learning also extends to current trends and events in one's given field. I am constantly trying to keep up on ever-changing practices and philosophies within my field, and bringing these topics to my class for discussion. It's always thrilling when you get students on opposite sides of a debate on a real life issue, provided they can discuss respectfully with one another.
My adult students LOVE to tell their stories! From work, home, school...it makes it so much more interesting to apply examples to the key concepts being studied
I agree, we need to relate to real life and make the learning relaxing and fun.
Hi Steve,
Great strategies. Thanks for sharing them with us. I know they will be of help to other instructors.

I like to use interaction, asking the adult learner questions. I believe that this keeps them engaged in the conversation. I also like to use real life examples of certain situation and scenarios. I believe that adults can relate to real life scenarios better than just lecturing on a topic by itself. Making learning fun, being enthusiastic and positive recognition are also key points in making the students participate and like what they are being taught.
Hi Steve,
What are some strategies you use to engage your adult learners? Thanks.
Gary
I think this really brings to life adult learning and allow adults to share their experiences.
