First Day of Class
I think two very important components of the first day of class are creating a positive first impression and setting clear expectations. The impression students have for you on day one is going to stick throughout the entire course. If you are unprepared, they are going to expect this will be the case each time. Also, the expectations you set will carry on for the entire class. Make sure you know what you expect from students and tell them clearly so there will be no surprises in the future.
I also think it's important to set clear expectations. You must encourage and enforce things like dress code, attendance, and/or other school policies from the first day in order to prevent possible problems later in the class.
Hi Laurie,
You are bringing to the first class meeting a nice blend of activities and information. All of this contributes to the students feeling comfortable with the class and understanding of the requirements. Great way to set the stage for student success.

I agree First Day comes once and is your time and the students time to understand the dynamics of personality in the class they will be spending the next 2months to 2 years. Settling the class with confident guidance on the first day is so important to the progress of this class working together to be the best professional individuals.
I personnally break the ice with not only orientation, syllabus review but most importantly personnal introductions from each student. This begins our process of communication that these students will desperatly need in the career I teach.
First impressions are lasting and great opportunities to model what your expectations are for the student.
Hi Katie,
Right you are. You have to make clear what it is going to take to be successful in the class and then show them how to do it. By having a clear plan the students can settle into the course and look forward to the coming weeks.
