1st Time Instructing - bombed out
This is my 1st time teaching. Really wish I would've done this course BEFORE I started, it would've made all the difference! I now realize it's my lack of structure in assessment that has them really lost. I am striving to correct this to salvage the quarter, but have already lost the respect of my students.
Hey we have all made mistakes the first time we have tried something, but don't give up. Your class is your team, work together. Although you are frustrated it is showing your human side to the students. Have the students take out a piece of paper and have them go down the course objectives from their syllabai and mark down what they understand and don't. That will give you an opportunity to sit down and create current goals as if it was day one. Also ask for input on how the students would like the information taught making them part of your team. Once your goals and plans to exceed them are set your leadership will earn you the respect of your team. Just don't give up, this challenge will make you a better instructor in the long run.
Also you can use the VAK method.
Visual
Auditory
Kinesthetic
Encompass all of those styles of learning into your goals and you will capture all of your students no matter what type of learner that they are.
Hi Tonia,
I wish you much success in completing this quarter. I would have a talk with my students if I were you and explain that you are going to revamp your assessment procedure for the end of the quarter and would like their input. Give each student a 3x5 card and have them give you input on their ideas of how the assessment procedure should be conducted. Don't have them sign their names and that way they will be more candid. I think you will find much appreciation on their part because you are coming to them and asking for input. Let them know you will consider their suggestions as you complete your assessment format. This way you are showing them respect and may be able to gain some respect back from them.
