First Day

I was glad to see that I am following the suggested guidelines on what to cover during the first day of class (just not necessarily in the same order). One of the first things I mention is that everything we discuss in class is subject to test and therefore it is extremely important to participate and pay attention to the class discussions. At the end of the first class meeting, I give a pop quiz on the broad guidelines that were covered (not little details). This lets the students know that participation and paying attention IS important.

Hi Richard,
I like your pop quiz idea at the end of class. Great idea to let students know that you do expect them to pay attention and participate.

I feel good as well knowing that I do most of what is being discussed in this module but not always in that order.

I ask students to spend a few moments chatting with the person sitting next to them to get acquainted. Then I will ask each student to introduce the person whom they just met to the group. The introduction must include their name, previous education/career and why they are taking this class or program.

This is a great way for me to observe and learn about each student and a great way for the students to become familiar with each other.

I do the same. I feel that class participation is key to meeting the learning objective. I give class participation points and I show them in the middle of a semester how they can impact their grade. It works.

Hi Richard,
Good to hear about your success with starting off a class. I like your use of the pop quiz to help them stay engaged plus it shows them the value of what you are sharing with them.
Also, the suggested guidelines are just that suggestions. Use any order you wish as well add or take away anything on the list. You are making the course your own so stamp your personality on it and enjoy teaching.
