Student Participation
I am always seeking new avenues in getting and keeping students interested in participation. When you give an assignmement, you expect some discussion/feedback the next return. Many are hesistant in fear of saying something that others may not agree or want to hear. Any more suggestions?
Diving the class into small groups is a good way to bring out the shy or reluctant class participant. Also incorporating gaming (content related) into the class is another technique good way to bring out the shy student.
In using this approach is it necessary for each small group to select a spokes person for that group or would you give each person in the small group to speak?
It is important to get all students to participate as it will help them learn
Does anyone have any suggestions for the students getting to know each other in an online setting?
Hi Geni,
The more your can get the students to sharing the greater their involvement and retention is going to be. You are doing that with your discussion format. Keep up the good work.

I have also found that this activity helps with facilitating class discussion and participation the topic.
Hi Joanna,
This is how I plan my participation/professional points as well. I base them on the course I am teaching and the expectations I have for the students in terms of their professional growth toward their career goal.

Participation points can depend on the type of course you are instructing. For example, in medical classes are they wearing thier uniforms? I tend to base participation on how they do thier class work, interact with the other students, discussions, and following the rules of the campus.
In computer classes where they just do thier work on the computer with very little interaction with others it is a little harder, but I see how they do thier assignments, help others, ask questions, ect.
Geraldine,
I need a bit of help with evaluating students' participation points, for I simply give them the points if they show up on time, and if they leave when I tell them they can leave. I need a better way to evaluate the students participation points.
Hi Geraldine,
I use small learning groups of 3-4 students. I have these groups meet and discuss the assignment or outcomes they found as a result of doing the assignment. Then I have them report out as a group on what they come up with. This method gets them to talking and helps them to be more self confident in their responses.
