First time

First impression is everything.

I find that it helps to focus on finding some "common ground" with the student during intoductions, no matter how apparently different everyone may seem at first.

Hi Tiffany,
Thanks for sharing these ideas with us. You have given great advice to beginning instructors. By being prepared and having a check list new instructors will be more on target and won't be apt to leave out critical information during the first class meeting.

First impressions do count! This is where the connection to the students begin.

Teacher should create a checklist or To-Do list of things to discuss. Should be early to plan, make sure classroom is neat, greet each student individually, introduce self, take attendance, and discuss materials for clarity.

Building a relationship through value.

Hi Marie,
So true and we need to always remember this as we go into a new course. So much easier to start positive rather than dig out of a hole.

...and it only takes seconds for someone to form an opinion about you. Terrible but true!

This is simple but true. First impressions is the foundation of your entire course. It is very hard to over come issues based on first impressions.
