I believe that when you first meet your class as an instructor that the students need to understand what your expectations are in accordance with the syllabus. The assigments, projects, and assessments should be clearly explained, as well as, the course rules that demonstrate the students' adherence to professional standards that are expected to transfer to the workplace upon graduation.
Hi Khadeer,
You make a good point about student expectations. Even though we are working toward the common college or departmental goals we do get to bring our own personalities into our instructional planning. This means our course objectives may be different and the students need to understand that. This way they can work specifically toward course success.

I agree with you and in the area that I teach, it is all the more relevant to clearly state my expectations.
I have often found students to have different expectations based on their experiences with different faculty. I let them know that the course objectives could be different, even though the program objectives could be the same.
Sherri,
I agree with you about the importance of making the expectations clear, and completing that task early. I am new to the teaching field and found this out the hard way. I figured that students should know that if they leave early, they wouldn't have the ability to take the quiz and may not reveive full credit. I now know I have to be clear with the expectations.

I always try to make sure they know the rules regarding attendance and class work. I like to let them know I'm flexible but can't be taken advantage of.
Hi Chantal,
I agree. You have to make clear the course requirements, policies and expectations right from the beginning.

Hi Sherri,
I agree with how you lay out the course expectations for your students. By having a clear picture the students know what they must do to be successful. This clarity also helps to get the students settled into the course much quicker.
