meeting students
When I have a new class, I immediately work on learning all of the student names. I will sometimes make a chart of where they sit to refer to if the class is especially big. The other thing I do is try to associate something with their name. The quicker you learn their name, the better. It shows that you truly care about them and they respond better in kind.
Hi Jamie,
Thanks for sharing your experience with the 3Ts. Last course I had two students with the same first and last names. Made me work to remember details to distinguish them apart in relation to their names.

When i started class this quater i had those same ideas in mind for learning eveeybody's name but that went out the window when 3 out of 5 of my students names start with t so for the first week they were the 3 t's. it's been a few weeks and now they are tiffany taylor toshia
I also try to learn names on the 1st day as well. I use each person's name during the lecture and on the second day I quiz myself mentally. The ice breaker helps because then I have more than a name and a roster, I know more about the student.
Hi Steven,
Good strategies for learning students' names. Thanks for sharing them with us. I know they will be of help to many other instructors.
