meeting class for the 1st time

when you meet a class for the 1st time you may always get students that don't like class or ask why are we taking this course..how do you handle that

There are always going to be students like that. While it can be difficult, there are some ways to help in certain cases. It is all about establishing relevance to their field of study, or going over a brief overview of what they will learn in this course.

I explain to them the purpose of the class and how the class will benefit them to achieve their career goals.

I wouldn't teach a course that I couldn't justify. I provide reasons for why I think the course is taught and why I think it is valuable. Do the students accept my reasoning? Not always. And certainly not immediately. Unfortunately, it may take years before they realize how important the course is. I should point out that I teach general education courses. English. Critical thinking.
