How do you get the students to understand you are there as a instructor and not look at your age?

Janis,
Yes it will. You will develop confidence in abilities as an instructor while demonstrating to students the standards of the profession.

I agree, my colleagues who are much younger have often expressed that this process may take some time for the students to realize that they are not their peers but the instructor. But being diligent in your professional demeanor will gain their confidence in your role.

This is true to some degree. I look young this is problem with my freshman classes. I follow the textbook outline an it works on my older students but the freshman like to challenge me because they see as their peer.

Hi Jamie,
That is the key. You are professional educator no matter your age and as result you are earning the respect of your students through your conduct.

I am 28 years old and I teach students that are much older then me but I carry myself like a professional person.

Hi Irene,
How has having older students worked in your instructional setting? What challenges and/or successes have you had with these students?
Thanks for your input on this.
Gary

i think this is true and really applicable in my job, i usually have students that are older than me.

Hi Lucetia,
Present yourself as a professional educator with extensive experience in your field. Go right into the course with confidence and organization and age will quickly cease to be an issue. Once the students realize that you are not one of their peers but the instructor they will settle into the course flow.
