try to make students comfortable

by explaining the course to them and working with them

I also try to make the classroom a place where learning is "fun", it should be intteresting material with "real-life" situations. I ask my students if they have experiences to share, and I also share mine -

Hi Robin,
This type of interaction and informal greeting helps the students to get comfortable with you and their colleagues. Good way to start a class.

I encourage students to move up toward the front of the room. I use humor (but never stand up comedy or slapstick) by saying things like, "I know you took the last seat in the back of the room but I can still see you". When the students smile or even laugh out loud it is definately an ice breaker. I encourage students to walk around the room and get phone numbers from other students in case they need a study buddy!

Hi Beth,
What have been your most effective ways of explaining the course and requirements to your students? Thanks for your input on this.
