Study Skills
I think it is very important to share some study skills that will help in each indiviual course.
Mary,
This is a great strategy. It is logical and sequential so it is easy to follow by students as you mention. If they will put forth the effort they will be successful in your course because you are giving them valuable study and support methods.

I like to review the multimedia resources available from the publisher of the textbook before I begin preparing for a course. There are usually a number of resources available to students in a companion book site, on an accompanying CD, or in printed form. I take the time to explain and demonstrate how to access these tools. For the student who is embarrassed to ask questions or ask for additional help in the presence of others, these study aids can be a wonderful resource.
I am preparing to teach a new course this session and have chosen to create my lesson plans using the study outline provided for each chapter. I intend to demonstrate how to take notes using this tool on the first day of content instruction. After that, I will allow students to take notes and organize materials using whatever strategy works best for them. I predict they will continue to use the study outline after they find out how easy it is to follow the sequence of instruction when the main topics are already presented in written form, thereby focusing on documenting important points for each section. My notes on the study outline will also serve as my lesson plan and substitute plan. I can use the margins for personal reflection on things to change/include the next time I teach the class.
Hi Jean,
Good support for older students. This is a valuable service to help them get settled into the course and feeling comfortable with the fact they can be successful even though it has been a while since they were in school.
Gary
I find that the older students have forgotten study skills and by reviewing them with the student and giving them options and examples- it helps them to relax a bit.
