name placards

The use of some kind name card at the students seat helps to learn names quicker.

Debra,
Good strategy. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I do this and it helps me remember names an also helps the students remember each other's names. We also play an ice breaker in which each student uses the first initial of their first and last name to match with a goofy nickname. It relly makes it fun and sometimes the nicknames stick and is fun throughout the class.

Lisa,
Yes, it is. I tell my students, even those that I have had previously that it is my way of taking role. I put out the name tents on my desk, they walk in pick up their name tent and go sit down. When I start class I walk over pick up the remaining name tents and put them out of sight. After class I then can record the names of those in that pile of name tents as being absent. It is quick and easy to do. Also, names tents help guest speakers with calling on students so there is a greater exchange of questions that way.

Is it acceptable to use name placards if I have already had a group of students in the past? I do remember some of their names but not many. Plus I would like to seat them, for classroom management.

This method works for me.

Joanne,
I think you will. Let me know how it works out for you.

I think that I will try this method because I have many cultural diverse students. Some of their names are difficult. Also I am a visual persom myself so I think that this will help me learn their names quicker.
