Allowing students to introduce another student

Some students are really, really shy and when you ask them to introduce themselves they normally talk very soft and just say their name. When you allow time in class for them to select a partner and they tell them a little about themselves, they forget all about being shy. It's normally easier to introduce someone else rather than yourself.

Shalanda,
This is an excellent idea to break the ice in the classroom. There is always that one student who sits in the back and never says a word. By making them break off into groups of 2 maybe these students will feel at ease since they are just chatting with one of their peers instead of in front of a whole class. Brilliant plan! I'm going to try it out in my next class.

Shalanda,
Good way to open up a new class and get everyone settled in. The more you can ease the anxiety of your students the greater their comfort will be as they prepare to work through the course. Good strategy.

This allows students to learn their classmates the first day of class. I find that students make friends and find great study partners just from the introduction. This exercise is not to embarace the student but to ease the anxiety of shy students.

Ronda,
I like anything like this as a way of getting the students settled into the course and having some fun. This really helps to set the tone for the class.

I take index cards and put names on them of characters. Example Laurel and Hardy, Mickey and Minnie, etc. I ask the students to find the match to their card, so Mickey finds Minnie, etc. I do this on the first day so that they are paired up with someone new and then they ask questions and prepare to introduce their partner to the class. It's fun and a bit silly, but manages to take some of the first day tension away.

I agree that allowing students to introduce each other encourages shy students to become more outgoing, and I have discovered that it seems to limit long responses from those wishing to talk and talk and talk.

I really like this idea as soon as we are prepared in the case that a student embarrasses other in front of the class, hopefully no one would be hurt in feelings.

I would agree with that as well. In my field which is Medical Assistant. I explain to the students that this will be part of thier career field. They are going to have to ask the patients questions and give that info to other healthcare professionals.

Shalanda,
This is a very supportive and non-threatening way to help students introduce themselves. Thanks for sharing it with us.
