I had never thought of giving a pretest to let the students become familliar with the class content

With my pretests I ask a series of general field questions. The students don't put their names on the tests so this relieves pressure on them. After completing the tests I lead a discussion on the answers that are given so the pretest is an informative effort for the students.

I would like to know more about pretesting, I do not know how to fit that to the first day of class. If the students never took that course before, I believe the pretesting may be hard and discourage them .

I use pretesting to give me a base line of knowledge on my incoming class. I find that this helps me to customize my content more accurately to that specific class. If you decide to use a pretest I think you will be very satisfied with the information it gives you.
