Covering Content on the first day

The way one of my courses is set up I have to cover 2 chapters on the first day (and they are tested over it the second meeting). I struggle with using enough time to establish a good classroom environment and still comple two chapters. They are usually very overwhelmed. I did put part of the first exam online this time so they could use their book and get a feel for the style of my exams. Any other suggestions.

Rachel,
This is a very hard way to start a new course. Without knowing the logistics of the course it is hard to offer any suggestions. The suggestion I would make is to try and distribute the two chapters of two class sessions to you have some time to do introductions and an ice breaker. It sounds like this is not possible with the requirements of your school so I'm not sure if this suggestion will work. I commend you for the online testing so you can some extra time to get the course started.
