Note Taking The Lost Art

Students could benefite greatly from a lecture on note taking. Outline skills and abbreviations are valuable. Too many students are lazy when it comes to using the pen or pencile. This is not good.

Donna,
So many students do not have note taking skills so the more we can help them along this line the more success they will have in the course.

I believe by incorporting the note taking skills as an activity of the class, students can create a good habit of notetaking.

Helen,
This is always a challenge. Glad to hear your school offers such a resource. It is unfortunate as you that many don't take advantage of the study skills class. I want all students to be successful but they are adults and it is their career at stake so if they don't take classes like this or chose not to put forth the effort to be successful then there is little we can do to help them. When this happens I let the students know I am there to help them if they decide to come back to school and try again I will a champion of their cause but it is up to them.

We also take the first week of class to go over note-taking, study skills, test-taking etc. I have found that it needs to be continually reinforced. When students come to me who are not doing well, the educational assistance person and myself find that they really didn't absorb/practice it. Two said that they were so overwhelmed the first two weeks that nothing stuck! We have since started offering another 4 hour class outside of the class times in the third week of classes. It isn't always well attended unfortunately.

Hi Tom. I agree! Note taking, studying, and test taking skills are things we review the first part of class when students start our program. I generally go over the Cornell note taking method but encourage them to identify how they learn best and use those strategies.

Kimberly,
You are providing such a valuable service through your tutoring. You are giving these students an opportunity to acquire a skill set that is going to determine if they are going to be successful college students.

I agree! I can't tell you how many students come see me for toturing and don't have the first idea about note taking, or using a highlighter effectively. It's one of the first things I do with them!
