First day introductions

Hello All,
I always debate the idea of providing my students with an oral resume on the first day of class. I hesitate with this idea because I do not want to come off as being "know it all" Does anyone have any suggestions on how to give a brief introduction on my education/experience?

Boek,
Good points on how to set up and start a new class. Each point contributes to and builds on the next so the students will look forward to coming back to the class next time.

The introduction can set the tone and atmosphere of the class. Let them know that it’ll be a cooperative effort from the instructor and students, something like “We’ll be learning together about such and such.” You would need to steer away from intimidating your students by saying that the students would need to put in this amount of work every night to survive. Also, right from the start, stay away from rigidity. Fluidity and interaction must be conveyed to the students so that they get an impression of a relaxed yet engaging environment. Of course, the instructor should back up such impressions by really moderating such a learning environment.

I like to share how I came to be part of the particular profession I am in and why I am passionate about teaching the classes that I teach. Every student wants to hear about how you got started, how many years in the profession and what jobs you have held. I find that the students especially enjoy hearing about when you were just a new grad with limited experience and how you continued to hone your skills year after year, obtaining promotion, and showing that with more degrees earned, the more doors that are truly opened, and the greater financial opportunities that came with that added responsibility. But, remember that at one time I was just an eager student, just like you. We all start out as inexperienced students with a goal and a dream for a new career. Setting in the classroom and taking the necessary courses is the beginning of that dream being fulfilled.

I provide enough information to show my students I am qualified to be teaching the subject I am teaching, but not so much that they think I know everything, because we both know I don't! I prefer to have my students ask me questions, which gives them the information they need to satisfy their curiosity.

Jennifer,
I agree and use them to open my new courses every time. The help the students to relax and get settled into the course.

Hello,

I feel that ice breakers are best, it eases my nerves and helps me to get to know my students

Daniel,
This is a easy, relaxed way to start a new course. Sounds like everyone has a good first class meeting.

I like Daniel's idea - it is hard to describe yr experience without sounding like a "know it all" but making jokes (including at yr own expense) can take care of that problem

Hi,

For my online class I briefly go over my background and crack some jokes about it. However, it is important to establish your credibility with the class. After presenting your information, ask the students to present themselves to the rest of the class. Have fun with it and the students more often than not like to talk about themselves.
