ice breaker for your class

how would you open up your lecture with adult leaners?

I agree with your comment. I have used this ice breaker before and works every time. The ice breaker helps students with team building and working together.

MARIE,
This is a easy non-threatening approach to starting a class. This way the students can get settled in the class and start getting to know each other as well as you the instructor.

I would have a positive quote on the board or a brain teaser. As students’ arrive to class, I would greet them and pair them up with another student so they can introduce one another.

After teaching a particular topic in class(Anatomy and Physiology)I encourage the students to come in the following week with an observation or a current article on an abnormality of either and the effect of that abnormality on the total body such as an illness or injury. It motivates them to "think out of the box."

Charise,
This "connecting the dots" between current events and the course content is a great way to illustrate the value of what is being taught. This effort really helps to get students involved in the learning process.

Terum,
The same way as any other opening. Have something planned or make a statement that will get their attention and get them engaged from the very beginning.

I think it really depends on the topic. Sometimes I find information in the news that closely relates to the lecture topic. Discuss that topic for a little while, then relate that to the lecture topic and go from there.
