First Day
I have found playing a quick game on the first day of class, helps students feel more comfortable.
I have also learned while it is important to lay the foundation for the course the first day, we should try not to overwhelm them because they may get discoruaged.
On the first day, I often have the students write a few things on a piece of paper that noone would guess by looking at them. Then, I take them all up pas them back out to the students and have them guess who it is, when the student guesses corectly, I have that person introduce themselves to the class. Also, I let them tell why they chose this career path as well. It's a great way to start the class off. This is my "ice breaker."
I often use a "BINGO" game to help students introduce themselves to each other. It gets everyone up and out of their seats and the atmosphere is much lighter after doing this ice breaker.
