Hand outs

Regarding concern with paper usage,is it acceptable to scan and email power points to students?

Elizabeth,
This is a great support you are providing your students. By providing these resources in advance they can bring copies to class and then make notes along side the printed copies of the slides to reinforce what is being said during the lecture. The retention of content is greatly enhanced this way.

I also allow the students to have access to my powerpoints prior to class. They then can use these to review the chapters and/or homework assignments. Any handouts that I summit in any pariticular class I also scan and provide online for the student.

Iris,
I use the same format with my handouts. By giving them as they are referenced in the course the students are more engaged in the content in the handout. The handout gives me a reference point throughout the lecture.

Iris,
I have used Moodle and I think you are going to like using it. It is a great way to share information with your students and it saves trees as well.

I wanted to also mention that I give my students each handout when it serves as an example of what we are working on that day. I give my lecture with handout in hand so they can use it as a visual aid as well as a study guide. I do not provide the handouts all at once as I believe they would be overwhelmed with a lot of information which does not make sense until we have had time to go over it.

Up until now I have given student paper handouts
which are over and above the examples set out
in out textbook. I encourage them to keep these
handouts in a folder as it will not only serve as a good study guide for this class and the state
certification test, but it will also serve as a reference when the students get out into the field and start working. Our school is currently
getting us started on Moodle (a computer-based
program whereby we can download documents which
the students can access save in their own computer files.) At such time as the program is available to faculty and students, I will simply download each handout and save a lot of paper. I look forward to this.

Dee,
By doing so you are giving them an advanced view of the upcoming course content. They can review the slides and then be ready to discuss them by class time.

I had not thought about emailing students the PPT slides. I think that it is a good idea and I feel like I have made effort to help them succeed.

Do to paper shortage at my school! We too have become a Powerpoint campus!! Thank you for the Microsoft information, I will forward it to all the students.

N.,
Yes. I make them available to my students through Blackboard. They can go to the BB site and download them for their use at any time.

I've emailed PowerPoint presentations many times. Paper conservation is a great motive, but it is also very useful to email presentations when updating students who missed the class where the presentation was used.

Microsoft offers a free PowerPoint reader that students can download, so there is no need to scan the presentation.
