Clear Expectations
How do you make your expectations clear to students?
Sandy,
So do I and this is why I work very hard to make everything clear for my students. This reduces their frustrations and fears and lets them focus on being successful in the course.

the syllabus and reviewing the calendar and my personal expectation on the first day of class
I put them on the syllabus. I read it to them on the first day of class. I have students sign that they understand the expectations. My first quiz in class in on the class syllabus and class expectations. I inform them before I reveiw the syllabus that I will be proctoring a short quiz.
I myself, enjoy clear expectations. Knowing what is needed and when along with participation guidelines are things that help me feel successful. Knowing that i have meet and or exceeded what I need to present in a course or job helps me to cover all areas without wondering if I missed something. I feel if it is required, and expected a lot of your students will rise to this level of expectation and make it a life skill.
Rich,
Put them in your syllabus, post them on the whiteboard, and review them each time the class meets. Expectations need to be repeated in a variety of ways in order for the students to "get them" in their minds.
