Meeting student for the first day of class

On the first day of class I go over class syllabus, course outline, and we do Ice breakers to introduce instructor and students.

Besides using the course material and ice breakers I have them interview someone in the room that they may not know. I write 3 questions on the board. Then they need to introduce this person to me and the class with a few facts. Usually the questions are something like; why did you choose this career etc but I always throw in one odd question like; what is your favorite ice cream ? I have been know to use this information and provide a treat on the last day.

Greeting students with a warm smile shows them that we are human and we care. They are very nervous as this is a new world for them. First impressions do mean alot...let them know we are excited to have them in our class!
