Letting the students introduce themselves and provide a little background helps to make everyone feel they are on a more level playing field. The teacher giving his/her background is usually appreciated by the student as they can comprehend the credentials of that teacher.
I do the same basic thing, I have the student stand and tell classmates their name, how long they have been enrolled in school, how much time they have left in school, what is their expectation of the class and what they hope to gain from the class. This helps me learn their names a little faster
