First Day of Class

Having and using a "to do" on the first day cannot be overemphasized. It will do a couple things. First you will be reasonably assured you have covered all important material. Second, it will provide your students the needed time and information with which to feel comfortable and will hopefull help them persist. Clearly, there are other benefits as well.

I was taught even as a young child that a first impression last. People will always remember the first time and what you did or said to help them remember you.

Hetty,
Right you are about the rattled teacher and the impact that individual has on the students. This is a mistake that we cannot afford to make as we start a new class.

The to do list also helps with first day jitters. Confidence is essential
for students to see in an instructor. In addition a sense of organization and efficiency will help students feel confident in their instructor and "buy into" what the instructor will share during lecture. A confused, rattled teacher makes a terrible first impression and they can lose credibility with students the first day.

Appeal to them. As soon as possible, learn as much as possible about them -- their names, where they come from, where they're headed to.

I agree Jesse. Nothing is more important than that first impression a teacher makes on his students. It can set the tone for the remainder of the course.

I agree that there are several good points to having a first day to-do list. One of the biggest benefits is that it creates a sense of professionalism in the students' minds about you. If they assume you to be unprepared or shakable, they will use it to their advantage. If they assume the instructor is solid and stuctured, they have a tendancy to just get on board with your plan.

Judy,
Isn't this a great feeling to have, knowing your are ready to go when the class meets?

Jennifer,
It saves so much frustration because you can follow the list and know you are going to be prepared for the next class.

I agree with you 100%, i have peace of mind being prepared for first day of class

A list will keep me focussed on what I need to cover in class that day and not get off track

Richard,
Good advice for all instructors but even more important for those that are just starting out in their teaching careers.

Absolutely! I could not function without my "First Day To-Do List" for each class. I think it also reinforces the idea of being PREPARED for class, whether student or instructor. And, it helps me to be sure I don't miss any important piece of information.
