I really like that idea! letting them know that the real world is going to wait for them and that they can accomplish anything if they really put there mind to it.
David, I like to use the term ROEI which stands for Return on Educational Investment when I'm attempting to motivate students.

I think sometimes students forget that the courses they are taking have real economic value to them in the future. They need to understand they are creating a future for themselves and their families so they need to work hard at being successful in all that they do.

I lecture at a medical "trade school" for lack of a better term. I'm always tempted to remind them of how much they pay for their education, but it is comparatively a good deal considering the field that they are entering.
