To make sure my students have a clear understanding of my expectations is have clear syllabus, written expectations given to the students and Power Point going over the expectations.

I am new at the teaching setting but I've been trying to incorporate a variety of techniques in my classroom. I always have the learn by lecture part to start, and then I like to incorporate lab days, study guides, worksheets, videos, etc. I have really been trying to see how my students best "learn" the material in my classes.

Reviewing the syllabus goals and objectives is a good start. I think an instructor must be very specific. That way when grades are posted there are no discrepancies.

Ryan,
What are some effective ways that you are able to get this feedback? Thanks for sharing with us.

I have found that student participation in class, feedback, and interpretive dance may be used successfuly to convey class expectations.

I give word glossory and definition.
and use powerpoint with specific content for the subject area.

Guillermo,
Good example of student engagement and content sharing.

1) listening --> repetition, repetition, repetition with remark, stories (they love them) some times as key words, i call them the "red flags" , "Five stars" etc
2) Visual --> Bring videos, make pauses with funny pics related to the topic, and so on
3) Tactile --> Maniquies...

Lilia,
I wish you continued teaching success. As you say each week gets better because you are gaining additional experience and confidence in your abilities as an educator. Keep up the good work and have fun teaching. This will make the preparation all worth while.

I not only inform the students of what is expected of them academically, I also inform them of how they will use what they are learning in the “real world.” By relating course content to applicable skills I believe the student will be more willing to apply themselves to the course work as they can see how it will relate to their goals

Being a first time teacher this was helpful. Every week gets better. But this week I started with visuals to help communicate the material and I liked this approach. It was well received.

I make sure that my student clearly understand the objectives of the course and what is expected of them by going over the grading scheme, quizzes, and major exams. I give them ideas on how to study effectively and managing their time wisely.

Ketly,
I like the way you explained how you see the syllabus being used. This is the value of having a well developed syllabus. It can save time and frustration for everyone.

Gayle,
Good plan for keeping everyone fully informed and up to speed in relation to course progress.

Gabriel,
So important to do with students. They need to understand real world expectations if they are going to be successful upon graduation. The more they can understand and experience real world settings the greater their understanding is going to be.

Go over the syllabus and have active discussions including answering my students questions.

Making expectations clear is extremely important for a teacher. I usually go by the syllabus to avoid miscommunication and confusion. A well-written syllabus clearly describes the course in question including clear goals, objectives, competencies, grades, school's mission, policies, teacher's and students' responsibilities and more...
It is very crucial that instructors introduce themselves and define the expectations not only the first day of school but also throughout the course period.

I use a typed out syllabus at the beginning of the class, that includes weekly topics, chapters to read, and class rules. we also going the grading system on the first day.

Then we have a computer "portal" system that I am able to post all assigments and due dates, as well as any power points or hand outs we went over in class. This provides availability to the material if someone is absent.

Making my expectation clear of the Do's and Don't,
and follow through with what I say.
By telling the truth of what is expected of them in the professional cooking field, with honesty and integrety speaking from my heart. So, it is very well received.

Jesus,
I wish you much teaching success.
