setting example

The first day of class and being prepared for it can not only help you let you inform your students on what you expect but lets you set an example of what you expect. I have learned that if I am on time, students are on time. If I hand out assignments when I should, students turn them in when they should. If I become lax so do the students.

David,
Key point about the human factor in teaching. This is what helps to engage the students and sets you up as a model of your field.

and additionally, let the Students know that you are human: be approachable, don't be afraid of showing some "nervousness" to a new student so that you "have something in common". Make sure that you maintain the ability to interact with the Student in the classroom, just so long as the Studen-Instructor dynamic remains in place.

Grace,
I think it is critical to set the expectations and share them right from the beginning. This way everyone knows where the class is heading. From then on it is a building, learning and interactive process of knowledge and skill acquisition.

Yes this is true. Setting expectations is important. This will allow the instructor to manage the tone of the class and eliminate future student advisements.

Rose,
You are a model for your career area and need to always remember that you are "on stage" no matter where you are in the school and whether you are teaching or not.

True. As an instructor, you become the main example and so we are to lead by this.

Chris,
Good point about the expectations students have for their instructors and why we need to always be professional in our approach. We set the standard and that standard should be reflective of the expectations of the field they are going to enter.
