Motivating Student

One of the keys of motivation is to make achievable goals. Instructors who understand student motivation can greatly enhance the classroom experience and student performance.

Cavon,
You are right about the need for passion and enthusiasm by instructors if they are going to capture and hold the attention of students. We need to bring both passion and enthusiasm to class each time it meets. To do less is to short change our students.
As for the student that doesn't really want to be in the class I would continue to encourage him or her. I would also talk with the student about talking with Student Services about other career options that might be available. Sometimes students like this are in the course and/or career area as a result of parental pressure, peer pressure or some other form of pressure. They need help and encouragement to find the right match for themselves and you will be doing a service to this student if you can help him or her to find where they best fit and are most comfortable.

To keep students motivated can be challenging. However, I feel it begins with the instructor. I have to be professionally motivated and excited about my field. Which I am! Students can be discouarged for lots of reasons. I would never try to play "hero" and get into a students personal business. But showing concern, acknowledgment, letting them know that they can get through this, and kind of being a classroom cheerleader, among other positive promoting activities can have a very motivating affect on everyone in the classroom. There is the occasional student who just doesn't want to be there. One you almost have to beg to show up. What do you do when you suspect that it's a self motivational issue? I've already had the "sit down and chat" session? The response was, "I'll do better". Where do I go from here?

Pamela,
Good point about achievable goals. They need to be realistic and understandable by the students. Once they understand them they will start to see the value that is coming from the instructional offerings being delivered.
