What To Do?
We are continually having a problem with this particular Cohort of students when it comes to tardiness and attendance. The guidelines have all been laid before them, the examples have all been set, from a professionalism standpoint the bar has been set high. Our issues come from the students have little to no regard on implementing these standards themselves, which causes for major classroom interruptions and lots of missed information. I would love some feedback as to positive ways others have handled or dealt with some of these similar issues.
Karen,
Getting student class on time is a challenge for us all. Your strategy gives them a reason for being on time and as you say for some it works and for others nothing seems to get them moving on time.

I start my class out with a short 8-12 question quiz, that gets picked up 10 minutes past. There is not make up option and this helps get them here on time....though it won't work every time.
Nicole,
Yes for both students and instructors. Rules have to be consistently enforced and there has to be consequences or there is not need to comply with the rules.

Are there consequences for not complying with rules?
Bethany,
Enforcement of the guidelines will go a long way. If they are late or absent there are consequences, period. When you have a cohort there is perceived power in numbers so the enforcement becomes more important. You have to take control away from them and put it back in the class and with you the learning leader. I set a limit on the number of absences and when they go over that number they are gone out of my class. It doesn't take long for this message to get around and the other students start falling into line.
