Keeping "IT" Real...

In my opinion, finding that balance between relating to students or enabling them is key.
We all want to be liked and accepted by others no matter our roles. However I have learned that when teaching its the professionalism mixed with being human in the classroom that brings respect from the students!

Beryl,
In the age of entitlement sometimes personal failure or success is lost by students. You are right it is up to them to put forth the effort needed to pass the course. We can provide support but only to a certain extent.

Win Lose or Draw, We are the instructors and responsible for the ebb and flow of the course. Maintain humanity and compassion, but I let it be known they can fail. They need to take responsibility for their education, I can only go so far, learning is a two way street.

I do believe that relate-ability helps in student interaction. I feel as though it lessens the gap between teacher and student, and ultimately shows that you are a real person too.

Fairly good statement. I tend to agree.

Michael,
There is a balance in this that must be maintained if control of the class is going remain in the hands of the instructor.

You are so right! It is tricky to engage the students effectively without becoming too lax on your expectations for the course.

Aaron,
Right you are about the need to maintain a balance between professionalism and the human factor. Both contribute to the development of students and they need to see both modeled in a way that demonstrates the highest level of professionalism.
