meeting the class for the first time
Upon meeting the class for the first time, this is the time you set the general tone for the module. You want to state not only what you expect the students to gain from class, but also how you expect class to function. This is the time you break the ice between yourself and the students, as well as the students with one another.
Calvin,
That is a lot of time with the same set of students so you are able to really get to know each other. This gives you a head start when you bring them into a new course. Through consistency you are sharing your expectations.

I have most of my sytudents between 3 and 7 classes over 4 semesters. After the first classes, the emphesis is on how the class is different and what they will learn. I find that be having the same class arules and expectations the amount of issues is much less.
Kristin,
The first class meeting is when the foundation for the course is established. The students learn about the expectations for the course and what it is going to take for them to be successful. The start of respect building starts with this first class as well.

This can be hard I think, although once you've started a class a few times it's a skill that gets easier. For my first class, I make sure I over-plan so that everything that needs to be covered will be covered and extra information can be given as well. I do this because the first class, students are a little shy to discuss or ask questions. Later, students get comfortable and discussions will last longer but the first day can be tricky.
