meeting class on first day
I realize it is key to be prepared for the first class meeting (and all following meetings) but the first one leaves the importance first impression. Being fully prepared is so essential. Studies on peer review instruction notes the essential element of preparedness (Seymour et al., 2013),

Ryan,
Yes, there must be a balance if the class is to move forward each time it meets.

I agree with you totally Gary. It's very easy for the class to get out of control if they feel like all we do is fool around or use too much humor
Glennda,
This is a common mistake that beginning instructors make. Thank you for the reminder. I use both the human factor as well as humor in my classes but I make sure to let my students know I am the learning leader and am in charge of the class.

I believe it is important to be human and have a sense of humor, but sometimes students assume that means you are too easy going and will take advantage of that.
Heidi,
A simple yet very essential part of being a good instructor. By being prepared and approachable you bring in both your professional personality but also your human side and an instructor.
