Meeting the Class for the First Time]
First impressions are important go hard than soft.
Thanks Stephen- I think whatever an instructor can do to remind students why they made the decision to return to school- the passion, desire to make a positive change in the world, etc is golden.
Mary
Billie,
Yes it does. This helps the students to see that they have an experienced learning leader that is going to share knowledge and content with them over the duration of the course.

I think the idea of giving your history and work background show the students where you have come from and gives them the goals to set for themselves. Billie
Stephen,
Good strategy to follow because this way you are letting the students personalize and verbalize their goals. This helps to make the goals real for them and increases their motivation levels just as it did for you when you were a student.

I agree on letting them know your goals and thus helping them achieve self confidence,When I started nursing program, our instructor asked us to explain why we want to become nurses, and everybody in class discussed their stories,I remember, how enthusiastic I was,and that made me to work hard to meet my goals.Even if the program was hard, that confidence made me wake up early everyday to start my new day and learn something new.just a thought.
Andric,
Good point about showing them that you are the learning leader. This is the start of developing respect with them as well.

you really have to be firm when you are talking to some students for the first so that they see you mean business and that you are here to teach them and help them where you know best. and also give them a little history of your life or your work back groung so that they can know where you are coming from and where you are going to be in your future and also set some goals for your self and let them know that this is to help you help them through there training.
Karl,
What are some strategies do you use to get this across to your students the first day?
