Lecture

With my lecture I seem to definitely lose most after about 15 minutes, but with that, we have not covered all materiel which is necessary for the day. Suggestions on involving students with this and being able to complete what needs to be given.

In my lecture-discussion type of classroom activities, I make it a point to ask questions and call on the students at random. I also include some real -life experiences whenever I can to get then interested in the topic(s). Sometimes I get asked by a student and before I give my answer or opinion, I solicit reactions to the question from the other students.

Louise,
You are welcome and I wish you continued teaching success!

Thank you Dr. Meers for your valuable suggestions to use during a lecture. I have also found that body movement helps as well as a sensitivity for student inattention. Louise Lotte,July3 2013

Kathleen,
You don't have to really stop the lecture process but at around the 15 minute mark or when you see them drifting away change the flow of the class. Stop and ask a question, or have a couple of students give examples of how the material that has been covered can be applied, maybe do a case study, anything that lets the students relax a bit and reset their brains. This could be for 2-3 minutes and then go back to the next topic. You will be able to maintain the flow and still keep students engaged.
