First day jitters shmitters
Personally I find that the first day is an exciting one. It's a chance to refresh and try a new approach to a class that maybe didn't work quite like you had planned the semester before. The first day always sets that tone and expectations.
Keiyanez,
This is such an important part of getting a class off to a good start. Getting students settled into a new course is critical to them being able to see how they can be successful in the course while meeting their career goals.

It’s normal to feel nervous on the first day of a new class – the best way to combat it is to prepare, prepare, prepare!
Also, just like any first time meeting, first impressions play a role. And for the students, they are all wondering what type of relationship with the class will evolve. This is why it is not a bad idea at all to plan in advance just what it is that you want to have happen on that first day of class. This will really set the tone for the class.
I completely agree with you. If every day could be like the first day but I think it really helps when you prepared and have everything laid it. It really makes a difference.
Joanne,
I teach from 4 until 10 pm so I can appreciate your comments. A six hour block of time during an evening is tough to fill with content and activities that will keep the students engaged. I have passion for my field and enthusiasm for teaching about it so I plan activities and content that will keep my students awake and moving about. Tough job but one I love.

I am an early morning person - nothing like the start of a new day! This is how I feel on the 1st day of class, whether I am the instructor or even the student! My challenge is to keep this attitude up while teaching an evening class where ALL of us have already worked an 8-10 hour day before coming to class! (It's still great!)
Freddie,
I love first class meetings for the reasons you list. They are fun because we do an ice breaker and then introductions. Once we have gotten to know each other we begin the course review. This generates a lot of excitement and gets everyone ready for the upcoming class sessions.

The first day is great not only because of the excitement of a new class but also because it really allows you to set the tone for the entire course. If you start the students off in the right direction on the first day, you will have a much easier time with them for the duration of the course.
Kenneth,
I like the first day as well because I get to meet a new group of students and kick off a new course. I am always amazed at the variety of backgrounds and experiences my students have. I get to learn from them while helping them move forward in their career development. This is an exciting part of our teaching.
