Knowing they support from their instructor is critical for many students. New students often feel that they can't be successful in a course so their confidence is low. Having you explain how you are there to support them if they are will to put forth the effort goes a long way in getting them started in the class.

Most of my students came to me through word of mouth as being the fun one who goes on field trips and does lab activities. I start my class off with my intro ad then I look for new faces in the crowd. We do an icebreaker activity an then move on to the syllabus.
