Mood on the First Day

I think it is very important to be in a positive mood on the first day of class. I know it is hard to hard to fake being positive if you are having a bad day, but that extra effort can make all of the difference when trying to gain the respect of a class.

James,
Like your use of the words sincere and honest during the first class meeting. These two words form the foundation for a positive learning opportunity for the coming class sessions.

Right, I agree being positive on the first day is very important. I have also found that just being sincere and honest can sometimes go a long way (sometimes complaining about a relatively safe topic, like traffic, can help students relate more closely and open up).

Lacey,
Good point about instructor passion and enthusiasm. Without either of them the students aren't going to be interested in the course.

It depends a lot on the instructor's attitude as well! I use ice breakers at the beginning

Tracy,
I teach a six hour block from 4 until 10 pm so I can relate to long days. To keep my students engaged I have to have a lot of variety and activities throughout the class. Requires a lot of planning but the results are well worth it because the students I have are adults that really want to be in school. Their motivation is high even if their bodies and minds are tired at times.

I agree ~ for the students and the instructors. Our classes are 5 hours long, so day one is a long day! Sometimes we start with ice breakers and games to ease into things. Not for the whole day, but the beginning portion so people are more at ease. It becomes a better learning environment.
